Comet Data Express is a utility program for Comet2003 and greater. This program provides a menu of the views and reports that have been defined, and provides a quick and convenient way to launch them with Crystal Reports and Excel.

Before using Comet Data Express, you must define your files with the DB Manager. Before using the Excel option, you must define your view(s) with the View Manager.

Using Comet Data Express

Please note that Comet Data Express requires that you have the following directories accessed:

COS
TMP

There are three ways to start Comet Data Express:

  1. Click on the "Comet Data Express" hyperlink in QMONITOR.
  2. From the READY prompt, type DBX and press Enter.
  3. From the Comet Utility Programs menu, select item #37.

Program options:

  • To display the list of reports for Crystal Reports, select the "Crystal Reports" tab.
  • To display the list of views for Excel, select the "MS Excel" tab.
  • To run the View Manager, click on the "View Manager" button.
  • To run the DB Manager, click on the "DB Manager" button.
  • To exit from the program, click the "Close" button.

Crystal Reports tab

The Crystal Reports tab contains the following options:

  • Preview Report
  • Print Report
  • Edit Report
  • Create Report
  • Add
  • Remove

  • To preview the report using Crystal Reports, select the report and click on the "Preview Report" button.

  • To print the report using Crystal Reports, select the report and click on the "Print Report" button.

  • To edit the report using Crystal Reports, select the report and click on the "Edit Report" button.

  • To create a new report using Crystal Reports, click on the "Create Report" button. The following dialog is displayed:

    The above dialog shows the views that have been defined in the View Manager and the files that have been defined in the DB Manager. To see only the views, check the "Views" box and un-check the "Files" box. To see only the files, check the "Files" box and un-check the "Views" box.

    To display the views and reports in another directory, click the down arrow next to the directory name and select the directory you want to use. (The directory list contains only those directories where views and database files have been defined.)

    When you are ready to proceed, select a view or file and click the "OK" button.

    The following dialog is displayed:

    Enter a name for the new report and a folder where it will be created. Then click on the "OK" button. Proceed to design the report using Crystal Reports.

  • To add a new view to the Comet Data Express menu, click on the "Add" button.

    Comet Data Express scans your Comet directories looking for ".rpt" files (the Crystal Reports extension). A dialog is displayed showing the existing reports. Choose the Comet directory and the report you want to add to the menu, and then click the "OK" button.

  • To remove a report from the Comet Data Express menu, select the report to be removed and click on the "Remove" button. You will be asked whether you want to erase the report. If you don't erase the report, you can add it back to the Comet Data Express menu at a later date by using the "Add" button.
MS Excel tab

The MS Excel tab contains the following options:

  • View
  • Add
  • Remove

  • To export the data to MS Excel, select the view and click on the "View" button, or double click on the view.

  • To add a new view to the Comet Data Express menu, click on the "Add" button. A dialog is displayed showing the existing views that have been created with View Manager. Choose the Comet directory and the view you want to add to the menu and click the "OK" button.

  • To remove a view from the Comet Data Express menu, select the view to be removed and click on the "Remove" button. (Note: Removing a view from the menu does not erase the view; it simply removes it from the menu.)
