Comet Directory Layout

Here is the recommended directory layout for a Comet system:

   c:\

These directories are described in the following table:

Directory Description

c:\ |----- comet
The Comet directory contains all of the executable files contained in a Comet release (*.exe, *.dll, *.ddl).
This directory should also contain:

your COMET.INI file (containing the master configuration information for your system)
the individual *.CFG files for each node (these are created by the SYSGEN program)

This directory should be the target directory for the desktop shortcut you create to launch Comet.
Note: This directory does not contain a QDIR file. It also does not contain the Comet license validation files (they are located in the COS directory). Thus, it is easier to update the Comet release simply by loading a new version of the Comet executables into this directory.

The REL directory contains the main Comet system programs:
qmonitor.obj qenditor.obj qstart.obj qipl.obj qipl0.obj qsignon.obj

It also contains some system-level utility files, including:
qercomet (keyed file containing Comet error messages) mtb.obj (MTB interface program) mtb01.obj (MTB license validtion program) mtb50 (keyed file containing all MTB mnemonics) The Comet Print Spooler (all overlays) The SYSGEN configuration program (all overlays) The pfont Driver Event Server progams Generators for the help system, Nova, and SuperNova

It also contains miscellaneous programs and files:
test4.obj (read/write benchmark program) cline.obj (screen benchmark display program) qt.obj (password entry program for QTerm) resecure.obj (resinstate security program) upgrade.obj (upgrade Comet password program) comet.ico (Comet icon for Windows) keycap.obj (subprogram to set the function keys) prtscrn.obj (print screen program)

The COS directory contains:

Comet single user license validation files:
qstart1 (Comet password) qqtilqz (MTB password)

Help files, Nova files, and SuperNova files
Temporary files used by Comet

Note: Signature Systems does not release the directory. It should be created at setup time and the QDIR files should be created using utility #45.

c:\ |----- comet |----- cos |----- temp
The TEMP subdirectory (under the COS directory) stores COMMON data for XAP applications. This subdirectory is not needed if XAP is not used.
Note: This subdirectory is not a Comet directory (i.e., it does not contain a QDIR file), so its presence is only in Windows.

The UTL directory contains the Comet utility programs released by Signature Systems.

c:\ |----- comet |----- ced
The CED directory contains the Comet Editor program (and overlays) released by Signature Systems.

c:\ |----- comet |----- ram
The RAM directory contains temporary files that are created by various system operations and some utility programs. Typically, this directory is a local directory. However, if it is located on a network file server, this directory should be a private directory for each user (i.e., not a shared directory).
